The Pre-K Program

  • What is available for 5-year-olds?

The Pre-K Stars class is generally for children who turn five by January of the current school year and who have preschool experience.  Many of the children have birthdays after the Fairfax County Public Schools cut-off date for kindergarten, which is September 30 of the current school year.  Some of them have spring or summer birthdays, so they turn five later than many of their peers and need more time for development and maturity before going on to kindergarten the following year.  Children in our 4-year-old program who are too young for kindergarten have priority.

  • Curriculum Overview:

Our Pre-K class is geared toward children turning five before or during the fall of the current school year, or for children who would benefit from an extra year of preschool.  We work to strengthen the skills children developed in the 4-year-old program.  We place a special emphasis on language through a wide range of sensory experiences, as well as role-playing, music, and listening to stories.  To develop good work habits, we have an established routine, and we encourage individuality in planning and problem solving.  We teach independent work habits and self-help skills, and we encourage development of pre-reading and mathematics skills through a wide range of experiences.  We use a developmentally-based approach to early handwriting, called “Handwriting Without Tears,” in which letters are introduced and practiced using a variety of senses.  Stars participate in Spanish and chapel activity periods twice per month, and they participate in music class weekly.
